Why a Bamboo Weighted Blanket?
Bamboo fabric is actually a form of rayon since it’s spun from cellulose, an organic compound that makes for around 30 percent of all plant matter. While there are other types of rayon - all of which are at least slightly more eco-friendly than cotton and purely synthetic materials - we opted for the one made out of bamboo because we’re confident that it’s the greenest option available.
Additionally, a weighted blanket made from bamboo rayon has been a frequent enough request from our customers. These two reasons are what fueled our determination to create a great bamboo-centric weighted product - and are why we’ve spent months sourcing materials, designing, and perfecting the entire manufacturing process!
Bamboo rayon has some specific properties that make it a perfect choice for bed-ware. Here are some of them:
Excellent thermal control - bamboo fibre is a thermal insulator, meaning that it acts as a good barrier between warm and cold air. The fabric itself is always cool to the touch and doesn’t trap heat inside it.
What this means for you: It means that you get a blanket that stays warm in the winter and cool in those hot summer nights. With it, you get the benefits of deep pressure therapy all-year-round!
Silky soft and gentle to the skin - bamboo fabric is to cotton what cashmere is to wool, which means it’s super soft. It might seem a bit paradoxical since it’s created from cellulose, but our meticulous manufacture process ensures that there are no rough edges on the fabric that could irritate the skin.
What this means for you: Do you enjoy fabrics that give you the feels? Then you’re going to love our new blanket. It is like wrapping yourself in a velvety cloud - you won’t want to get out of the bed in the mornings!
Antibacterial, anti-static, and hypoallergenic properties - according to some studies, bacteria have a hard time surviving in bamboo fabrics, thanks to the material’s structure and chemical properties. Bamboo rayon fabrics are also anti-static (which means that they eliminate the build-up of static electricity), as well as hypoallergenic - people with sensitive skin often choose rayon clothing in an effort to stave off allergic reactions.
What this means for you: Using bamboo fabric for your bedding usually means that you won’t have to deal with a sweaty odor or mildew. Although bamboo is still susceptible to dust mites, it’s an efficient barrier against bacteria and other allergens. With the new Calming Blanket, you can hope for better, longer, but above all else, healthier sleep.
Great at wicking away moisture - bamboo fabrics are very specific - they absorb moisture but the unique structure of the fibre doesn’t keep it trapped. Essentially, moisture (such as sweat) is absorbed for a short period of time (while you’re sleeping) and then released to the surface after a while, where it can easily evaporate.
What this means for you: It means that you now get to sleep more comfortably, without waking up in a pool of sweat. Since the fabric won’t trap the moisture inside it, it won’t stay wet or need to be aired out frequently.
Durable & machine-washable - our bamboo fabric is as strong as they get. Generally, all rayon is extremely durable and far surpasses cotton and other fabrics when it comes to longevity.
What this means for you: Your initial investment in this blanket will pay itself in many ways, not the least of which is the length of time you will get to use it.
- Eco-friendly & biodegradable - while bamboo rayon manufacture has its problems, we do our best to source our fabric from suppliers that adhere to our strict eco-friendly policies. 100% bamboo rayon is 100% recyclable and, because the plant is easy and cheap to grow, its manufacture is not as detrimental to the environment as the manufacture of other textiles.
- What this means for you: With this blanket, you’re supporting the use of sustainable materials, and lowering your carbon footprint. You get to pride yourself on being a part of the solution, and not a part of the problem
The New Bamboo Calming Blanket - Upgraded Design, Upgraded Benefits
Weighted blankets have been used for sleep and stress therapy for years, and are becoming more and more mainstream in recent times. The benefits of using one are enormous, and improving on them was indeed a challenge. However, here at Calming Blankets, we rose to that challenge, delivering to our customers what we feel is the ultimate weighted blanket experience.
Size & Weight
Our new and improved weighted blanket made from bamboo is a single-sleeper item - it measures 198cm X 122cm, which gives you more than enough wiggle room, even if you’re pretty tall. We currently have three different weights in offer - 4.5kg, 6.8kg, and 9kg - plenty to work with here when looking for a perfect fit. Most experts recommend aiming for 10 to 15% of your total body weight. The reason why we went with a single-sized blanket for this first batch is because deep pressure stimulation works best when it’s focused on one person. If you’d like to share your blanket with someone, you might want to take a look at our regular queen size edition here.
Ultra Soft Bamboo Cover
The first thing that you will notice when running your hand over this cover is that it’s ultra soft and comfortable. This bamboo fabric cover is even softer than cotton, thanks in part to the delicate manufacturing process and the high-quality raw material. You will also notice that it’s extremely cool to the touch and extra breathable, which makes it perfect for those hot summer months when you would generally replace your regular weighted blanket with something lighter and more porous.
We currently have two cover colours available - Midnight (dark grey) and Maldives (a green/blue combination). Both are soft and neutral and match a variety of other colours, which means that you can easily pair them with the existing decor in your home.
Inner Blanket, Glass Beads Filling & Weight Distribution
The inner blanket is where all the magic happens! This one is made from 100% bamboo rayon (same as the cover), which helps with temperature control and moisture absorption. Each seam is double-stitched to ensure durability, but we still recommend against machine-washing frequently.
To make sure that the weight is evenly distributed over your body, the inner blanket is lined with small 15cm X 15cm pockets, each stitched through so that the glass beads can’t seep from one into the other. The beads themselves are 1mm in diameter but heavier than poly pellets - only a small handful of these beads is needed for each of the pockets, keeping the blanket relatively thin. They are also completely soundless and won’t disturb your sleep, even if you toss and turn a lot in bed.
We’ve also made sure that the blanket’s weight is always perfectly distributed over your body. By adding more ties to the inner blanket - this one has 12 in total - we were able to eliminate that uncomfortable and ineffective “bunching up” in the middle. In case you notice that your blanket feels a bit heavier on one of the sides, one or several ties have come undone. Unzip the cover and tie them back together firmly - this will most likely solve the problem immediately.
Safety & Care Tips
As with all of our weighted products, we recommend the use for adults who are capable of independently manipulating a blanket that’s slightly heavier than the norm. If you’re buying for a small child, please take a look at our weighted blankets for kids. This blanket should not be used near an open flame, cut, ripped, or manhandled in any other way. If it tears and the glass beads start spilling out, do not ingest them and dispose of the blanket immediately.
We recommend not washing our blankets too frequently in order to preserve the durability of the materials. Both the cover and the inner blanket are machine-washable (mild detergent only and no fabric softeners), and they should be dried on a flat surface.
