Can Weighted Blankets Improve Sleep?

Not getting enough sleep at night can have real and long-lasting consequences on your quality of life. And, you don’t need us to tell you that - if you’re here, you’ve probably experienced it yourself many times over.

weighted blankets for insomnia

Can you remember a particular day when you’ve felt exhausted, drained, and just not up to anything? If you think hard about it, you will most likely find that you woke up several times that previous night and that you got up feeling as if you’ve had zero sleep.

There are a lot of us out there who are struggling with the same issue day in and day out, and a good number of us are turning to weighted blankets to deal with that pervasive sleeplessness and loss of sleep.

Covering with a weighted blanket is often described as getting a huge, whole-body hug that just goes on, and on, and on. Most people find this sensation really pleasant, for several reasons.

First of all, being hugged is comforting and calming - it speaks to something in all of us that just wants to be acknowledged through physical contact. However, there’s more to it, and it has to do with how your brain ‘sees’ your body.

The proprioceptive sense is a system we don’t think about much but it governs how we ‘feel’ our body parts in space, as well as how we perceive the effort that goes into our motions and movement.

When this system is not finely tuned, it can lead to sleep problems because our brain is not getting the feedback it’s looking for.

This can cause feelings of restlessness, overstimulated brain, and stress - feelings that we often can’t track back to their real source, which is an imbalance created by one of our senses.

Causes of Troubled Sleep That Respond Well To Weighted Blanket Therapy.

At any given time, around 10% of Australians are affected by troubled sleep. While cases run from mild to acute to chronic, the fact remains that even one night that goes without you getting the sleep that you need will take its toll on you.

Common causes of troubled sleep are:

  • Stress

  • Gastrointestinal problems such as reflux.
  • Nasal or sinus allergies.
  • Endocrine problems.
  • Back pain.
  • Breathing problems.
  • Inflammatory conditions.
  • Certain foods and beverages.

Of course, if your sleeping patterns are debilitating, you will want to check in with your doctor to find the root cause.

We strongly encourage all our customers to do that prior to purchasing a weighted blanket just to see if it can potentially be helpful.

When it comes to stress, our customers tell us that covering with the Calming Blanket makes them feel more secure and quells their overactive mind.

The Calming Blanket Customers That Found An Effective Relief For Their Troubled Sleeping!

Here are just a few of the reviews that can be found on our website, and on our Facebook page. We could talk up our products until we’re blue in the face, but firmly believe that those people who have been using our weighted blankets (and experiencing the benefits) are the people you really want to listen to...

“I picked mine up on Tuesday.. 5 days of using it, and no regrets ! On the couch over my lap with a book!! I haven’t been able to sit still and read a book for years ! I go to sleep instantly and if I’ve woken over night it’s been once as opposed to 3 times and I pass out very quickly. Waking up easier in the morning and I feel much more rested ! I hope it lasts !!! Thank you!” - Grace Prochilo

“I love my calming blanket, even more than I thought I would, I was a bit skeptical of how much difference it would make to my sleep and have to admit it is amazing. would highly recommend to all. The sales and after sales assistance is brilliant.” - Kerri Lynne

We have more than 200 reviews like these on our Facebook page, all from people raving about how much the Calming Blanket helped them improve their sleep. We realise that this is all anecdotal evidence, but even so, it’s pretty powerful. That said, there are some scientific studies that tested the effectiveness of weighted blankets so let’s quickly take a look at those.

Weighted Blankets & Sleep - What Does The Science Say?

Unfortunately, scientific research on weighted blankets is limited. Specifically, studies that look into their effectiveness for sleeping pattern are difficult to design and execute, because there are so many variables that need to be taken into account.

Perhaps the most important study looking into weighted blankets and sleep was published in 2015 in the Journal of Sleep Medicine and Disorders. It included 31 adult subjects with what was described as long lasting sleeping issues.

After tracking their sleep for one week with their usual bedding, the scientists gave them weighted blankets to use for two weeks. 80% of the participants found the weighted blanket beneficial.

They slept longer, woke up less during the night, and felt more refreshed in the morning.

It’s important to note that many manufacturers claim an increase in serotonin and other neurotransmitters associated with using a weighted blanket.

At this point, this is still purely speculation (as Dr. Badre notes). Most users do express feeling calmer and happier, however, we still don’t have access to studies that prove a chemical brain reaction.

We’re hoping that we won’t have to wait for too long to have a confirmation based in science, though.
